Fifteen

Nerves raged through me as I sat opposite of Felicity at our candle-lit table. If I’d known this restaurant was so fancy and romantic, I’d have picked a different place. Too late, we were here and our mains were already on the way.

At least I didn’t bring the unicorn plushie I bought for her from Myths & Monster. That would’ve stood out way too much. I’d have to give it to her later.

I smoothed out my dress, the fabric soft and supple. I’d have preferred to wear something different and new but that involved going shopping and I hated that.

“So…” I gathered a breath, trying to come up with clever and riveting conversation. “This is a fancy place, huh?”

Felicity chuckled dryly. “Very. I like the candles.”

“Me too, me too.”

The conversation fell silent and we both reached for our drinks, desperate to have something to do. This was not how I intended for this to go, at all.

“How’s work?” Felicity asked.

“Good. I checked on the unicorns today but you know that, you were there.” I instantly winced. What a lame answer. I did other things today, I could talk about those. “I filled out a lot of forms.”

“Forms? How fun.”

“So fun,” I agreed quickly, downing half my glass of white wine. This was going terribly.

The server brought brief relief when he came with our food, presenting us with large plates with minimal food. A small tower of fancy lasagna for me and a miniature quiche for Felicity, both garnished with a pretentious tuft of greenery.

I waited until the waiter was out of earshot. “These are mains?”

Felicity burst out in laughter. “I was thinking the same thing. These are tiny!”

“So tiny. It might be delicious, though?” I dug into the neat stack of pasta, my first bite almost the equivalent of a quarter of my food. The steaming mouthful provided savoury goodness but nothing that blew me away.

I cleared my plate far too quickly and folded my cutlery over it. “Not bad, just wished there was more. What about yours?”

“It’s good,” Felicity agreed as she wiped her mouth on the cloth napkin. “But yeah, I could’ve eaten double that.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t realise this place was this kind of fancy. I just wanted something that wasn’t microwaved ready meals,” I confessed.

Felicity chuckled. “Dining out isn’t really my thing.”

“Why didn’t you say?”

“You seemed excited about it.”

“I just thought this is what people did on dates.”

She placed her hand on top of mine, her smile warm. “Maybe we’re just not restaurant-date people.”

I concentrated on her fingers brushing over my skin, the soft touch reassuring. This was Felicity. We’d shovelled shit together, there was no need to pretend or disguise who I was. With that in mind, I leaned in closer, my voice reduced to a conspiring whisper. “Is it bad that I kind of want to stop at the pizza place we passed on the way here?”

Felicity grinned even wider, the sparkle returning to her bright eyes. “I’m so glad you said that, I would love a slice of pizza.
